The patient presented with a history of a missed menstrual period, abdominal pain and bleeding. She was found to have a positive pregnancy test, and by ultrasound, a mass in the left pelvis without any sign of pregnancy inside of the uterus. A diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside of the uterus) led to an exploratory laparoscopy. The excessive blood in the pelvis prevented adequate visualization of the products of conception; therefore, this patient underwent a standard laparotomy.
