On January 18, 1998, I traveled to Estelí, Nicaragua, as a volunteer in Medical Training Worldwide's Laparoscopic Surgery Training Program. I was there for a week proctoring two Nicaraguan Surgeons in their first 10 laparoscopic cholecystectomies.
I brought with me equipment generously donated by Joe McGinnis from Smith & Nephew Dyonics, Mike Mansfield from Circon, as well as from Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Michigan. The trip was very rewarding and completely successful. In four days we completed the training of two surgeons by performing 10 laparoscopic cholecystectomies. In addition, I performed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on the father of one of the physicians at the hospital.
